Provenance research investigates the history of an artwork or cultural object by tracing its ownership, location, documentation, and movement over time. By examining archival records, collection catalogues, labels, inscriptions, correspondence, and historical context, researchers can clarify an object’s identity, authenticity, legal status, and cultural significance while identifying gaps, disputed ownership, or possible loss and displacement.
